ANNIE FISCHER PLAYS BEETHOVEN
Annie Fischer plays Beethoven in a way that few can match. She was one of the greatest performers of the master's music, and in my opinion could have taught Schnabel and maybe all the other so called Beethoven experts a thing or two. The beauty of her phrasing and her touch, the subtlety with which she brings out hidden lines and gives them life, the tenderness and intensity of the drama of her playing is accomplished without inserting anything of herself between the composer and the listener. She understood perfectly well when, and the extent to which, the interpretation was already written in the score, that it did not need her help to make it heard or felt, and allowed it to come directly from the composer.
One does not come away from one of her performances thinking about the wonder way she had with the music. Rather, one feels that one has had the immense pleasure of a direct communion with the music. The recollection, almost after the fact, is simply that this is the way Annie Fischer plays Beethoven.
