The Horowitz recitals and documentaries found on this page offer a deeper look into the man and musician that we are usually afforded in these pages. It is one thing to listen to a pianist play a piece, or even a number of different pieces. It is another to hear them played in the context of his vision of what he would like us to come away with after an evening's program of his playing. To be able to hear and see him speak about himself and his music takes us to realms we seldom have the opportunity to visit.
You will see, from these The Horowitz recitals and documentaries, that there are specific works he returns to over and over. it is doubtless a combination of the effect these works achieve in his concerts and the fact that the his audiences demanded them. But in the ensemble, he does not stray far from a favorite handful of composers: Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, and a handful of works from each.
Earlier on he would include the occasional piece by other composers, Mendelssohn, Moskowski, Haydn, Debussy. We have the luxury of hearing the complete Prokofiev seventh sonata from a 1951 Horowitz recital and two pieces by Fauré from 1977.
Only the most intensely interested Horowitz scholars will want to hear all of these Horowitz recitals, but it is interesting to pick one from each available decade to get a sense of the evolution in his thinking and playing.
