The 1983 Jorge Bolet Masterclass featuring the Rachmaninoff Piano
Concerto 3 in D minor, Op 30 is an extraordinary experience. It delves deeply into
so many pianistic and interpretive aspects of the work and is well worth
taking the time to listen to in its entirety even if you are not able to play at this level yourself. Your greater understanding of the music, and the resultant increase in your enjoyment of this great concerto is a gift from one of the master pianists of the 20th century.
Bolet is an
articulate teacher and is concert-ready to play the passages he wants to
demonstrate to the students, all of whom are very accomplished pianists
and piano competition winners.
One of the pianists taking part in the Jorge Bolet masterclass, Barry Douglas, is a
Tchaikovsky Competition winner (1986) and has made many fine
recordings, including one of the Rachmaninov third concerto with Yevgeny
Svetlanov conducting the Russian State Symphony Orchestra.
After the Rachmaninoff masterclass, there is a recording of the complete concerto as performed by Jorge Bolet.

This Jorge Bolet Liszt Masterclass was given in the Library of Congress,
Washington DC, 1986 as part of a commemoration of the 100th anniversary
of the death of Franz Liszt. Unfortunately the video quality is very
poor. But the quality of the audio is fine and Bolet's teaching style
and words of wisdom shine through.
Pianist Robert Finley plays Liszt's beautiful Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude
and receives invluable instruction from one of the greatest pianists
and leading interpreters of the piano music of Liszt of the second half
of the 19th Century. The detail of Bolet's teaching is amazing, the
explanations, while not particularly eloquent, are brilliant, and one walks away with the impression of having
had the most extraordinary lesson of one's own.
And once again,
as is so often the case with these masterclasses, when the teacher
demonstrates by playing a passage himself, my first reaction is to give
up the piano and go into advertising or plastics. Hear for yourselves as Bolet plays
the second half of this piece. The beauty of his playing is to die
for.
After the Liszt masterclass, there is a recording of the complete concerto as performed by Jorge Bolet.
