Marcel Ciampi. What a pianist! How this name escaped me until now seems utterly inexplicable, but here he is at last. His Mozart, his Chopin, his Liszt, his Debussy are incomparable.
He studied with Louis Diémer at the Paris Conservatory where he won a first prize in 1909. Thereafter hou toured extensively as a soloist and with the great Catalan cellist, Pablo Casals. From 1941 until 1961 he taught piano at the conservatory. Among his most notable students were Yvonne Loriod, Eric Heidsieck, Cécile Ousset, Jean-Marc Luisada and the entire Marcel Gazelle and Menuhin family of pianists. He also taught the noted Scottish composer Thea Musgrave.
He is said to have had a close connection to Debussy, and the Romanian composer Georges Enesco, dedicated his third piano sonata to Marcel Ciampi in 1938.
